Ephor
Attested elsewhere in ancient sourcesOne of five annually elected magistrates who formed the most powerful governmental body in ancient Sparta. Chosen by the popular assembly of Spartan citizens, Ephors ("overseers") served as a check on the dual kings' power, with authority to supervise, fine, prosecute, and even depose monarchs for misconduct. Their extensive duties included presiding over the Gerousia (council of elders) and assembly meetings, receiving foreign ambassadors, controlling foreign policy, serving as judges in civil cases, overseeing the education system (agoge), and enforcing Spartan law and customs. Each month they exchanged oaths with the kings - the kings swearing to rule according to law, the Ephors swearing to preserve the kingship as long as the kings kept their oath. The Ephorate, likely established in the 8th or 7th century BCE, represented a democratic element within Sparta's oligarchic system and was unique among Greek city-states, effectively making these five men the most powerful officials in the Spartan state despite their non-aristocratic origins and one-year terms.
Acenes of Sparta: The Dragon Slayer
A dragon is the reason the 300 died. Leonidas used the magic of the gods to bind Kalaxes beneath Taygetus, and the price was his life and his men's. Sixty-two years later a seven-year-old of the agoge falls into the dragon's crypt and inherits the unpaid balance.
