From age seven until thirty, they lived under strict discipline in military barracks as part of their training in agoge. Their lives revolved around physical toughness and obedience; they were taught stealth (even encouraged to steal food but punished if caught), survival skills in harsh conditions, and unwavering loyalty to Sparta's laws and comradeship within their phalanx formations.
