Homer does not tell the whole war. The poem covers a few weeks in the tenth year and ends before the horse and before the city falls, with the burial of Hector.
The Spartan claim on the story is Helen, who was queen in Sparta before she was in Troy, and whose sanctuary at Therapne near the Eurotas was still being visited centuries later.
