Known only from this scrollThe mythological contest between Athena and Poseidon for patronage of the city of Athens. When the newly-founded city (then called Cecropia) sought a divine patron, both Athena and Poseidon competed by offering gifts to the citizens. Poseidon struck the Acropolis with his trident, creating a salt spring symbolizing naval power. Athena offered an olive tree, providing food, oil, and wood. King Cecrops and the citizens chose Athena's gift as more useful for their society, making her the city's patroness and renaming it "Athens" in her honor. This myth reflects the historical transition of Athens from a coastal power dependent on the sea (Poseidon's domain) to a civilization valuing agriculture, crafts, and intellectual pursuits (Athena's domains).
